Coats and shoes have a way of taking over a home—especially when there isn't one clear place for them to go.

For this Royal Oak, Michigan project, the family's coats and shoes had gradually become spread across several areas of the home. Items were stored in the basement, around the back entrance, and inside a front entryway closet. The result was cluttered pathways, overflowing storage, and shoes that seemed to find their way everywhere except where they belonged.

Instead of treating each area separately, we looked at the home's overall storage and created a system that brought everything together.

We started by clearing out the basement storage area and sorting the family's coats, shoes, and seasonal items. We then determined what needed to be easily accessible and what could be stored away for less frequent use.

By making better use of the front entryway closet and an additional basement closet, we were able to consolidate the majority of the family's everyday outerwear into designated spaces. We also cleared the area around the back door, giving shoes a proper home and creating a clear pathway into the house.

The biggest transformation wasn't simply having fewer things out—it was having a system that made sense. The family can now grab what they need when they're heading out the door, put things away when they come home, and move through the entryways without navigating around piles of shoes and coats.

Sometimes creating a more functional home isn't about adding more storage. It's about looking at the storage you already have and making it work harder for you.
